5 Ways to Become a Better Driver
By: Good2GoPublished: November 9, 2015
Remember when you first got your driver’s license? It’s a day of both bliss and uneasiness. You’re free at last, but being on the road can be a scary place for new drivers. There’s a ton of things to consider: speed limit, traffic, construction, other drivers, and a myriad of other distractions. Whether you’ve been on the road for two decades or two weeks, there are some easy things you can do to make yourself the best driver possible.
-
Install a text blocker
As members of modern society, we are glued to our cell phones. We check them constantly and for some that doesn’t stop once they get behind the wheel. It’s an unnecessary risk that can easily be avoided by installing a text blocker. These devices block text messages, email, Internet browsing, and certain applications. And don’t worry, your passengers will be free to use their cell phones as they please. An added bonus of adding a text blocker is the potential to save money on car insurance. Good2Go’s Cell Phone Safety Discount gives all participants 5% off their car insurance if they successfully install a text blocking device.
-
Check mirrors before driving
This may seem simple, but it’s easily overlooked. Aside from the windshield, both side and rear-view mirrors provide the greatest amount of visibility in a car. Before you pullout of your driveway, make sure all mirror surfaces are clean and set in the correct position. Not every blind spot can be eliminated, but using the mirrors to their full advantage can drastically reduce your chances of an accident.
-
Stay calm, cool, and collected
It happens to the best of us. Someone cuts us off, or disregards the rules of the road, and we immediately get fired up. Try your best to remain in a calm emotional state. Don’t try and place blame on the other person. Humans make mistakes and unfortunately sometimes they happen on the road.
-
Obey the laws, even if they’re inconvenient
It sounds awfully cliche, but always follow the law of the road. As drivers, we’re constantly tempted to bend the rules, especially if we think no one’s watching. Those five extra minutes you save by speeding isn’t worth the risk. An accident or hefty fine can jeopardize not only your license, but your well-being.
-
Know where you’re going
Getting lost isn’t fun. Drivers who are lost are more likely to disregard traffic patterns and experience frustration. There are quite a few services out there that’ll help you get from one place to the next. MapQuest, Google Maps, Apple Maps, in-car GPS, and Waze are just a few of the tools we have available as drivers. Knowing the way before departing will minimize any potential time loss and decrease your risk of a headache.
