Most Reliable Cars that Won’t Break the Bank

Have you ever bought a cheap pair of jeans, only to have them last you a month and then fall apart at the seams? If you wanted, you could keep buying that same pair of jeans every month and have them consistently fall apart. Or, you could invest in a quality pair that will last you the entire year – maybe longer – and possibly save yourself money, time, and frustration. Buying a cheap car is no different. You could buy the cheapest car you find on the internet, but take a gamble on whether or not you’ll make it to work every day. Luckily, there are a handful of reliable cars that are also affordable. Here’s a list of some of the best.

Toyota

Toyota is the most reliable car brand according to Consumer Reports, knocking Lexus from its former throne. Toyota scored an average reliability score of 80/100, which is calculated by analyzing survey data of car owners who reported any serious problems that occurred in the last 12 months. Toyota Matrix models produced between 2008 and 2010 make the top of the list, followed by 2012-15 Toyota Corollas.

Honda

Honda usually falls at the top of the list of most reliable cars. Through the years, they’ve consistently churned out quality, well-rounded models. They are also known to last 250,000 miles or more – perhaps the longest of any car manufacturer on the market. Based on their reliability alone, newer Hondas can fall a bit higher on the price scale. Older models, like the 2007 Honda Accord have been recognized as one of the most affordable and reliable vehicles out there.

Mazda

Like Hyundai, Mazda also offers an admirable warranty, and recently extended the warranty for RX-8s produced between 2004 and 2008 due to its unique power plant. One of the greatest things about Mazda is they manufacture cars that actually drive nicely. Oftentimes, manufacturers are so focused on the bells and whistles that they forget about making the car’s main purpose, driving, is enjoyable. Surprisingly, the 2010 Mazda Miata was listed by U.S. News as one of the top 10 cars under $10,000, which makes it an excellent affordable sports car.

Subaru

The brand Subaru has built since it was founded in 1953 is one that exudes modesty, familial values, and adventure. Baby Boomer’s memories are flooded with images of packing up the Subaru and heading out on a family vacation. Subaru has been able to stay on top of its game by continuing to produce quality yet affordable vehicles. They are built to last. 97% of Subaru’s sold within the last 10 years are still on the road today.

Hyundai

Hyundai has been named the top reliable car brand by a number of sources. According to CarMD, the average cost to repair a Hyundai was just $312.67 – the second lowest overall repair cost. It also claimed the title of having the lowest repair frequency. They also claim the title of “best warranty in America,” with a 10-year 10,000- mile powertrain warranty that covers the replacement of selected engine and transmission/transaxle powertrain components. One of the most reliable models is the 2009 Hyundai Genesis.
