Stranded on the Side of the Road

We all know that dreaded sound of a car that won’t start or a battery that has lost its juice, but as cringe worthy an experience as that might be, it pales in comparison to being out on the road when some vital piece of your vehicle decides to die on you. It can be a nerve-racking and even dangerous experience, so while it is important to hope for the best, it is also a smart idea to be prepared for the worst.
If your car breaks down and becomes inoperable while you’re driving, try and pull over onto the shoulder of the road. It might seem obvious as to why you’re better off on the shoulder of the road than sitting in the middle of the road itself –it is possible to work on your vehicle, traffic isn’t blocked, your chance of getting hit is much lower, etc. Try to pull over if you can, but if you get stuck on the road, don’t get worked up and most importantly, stay inside your car. Unless your vehicle is on fire, getting out onto the road, especially if you’re on a highway, can be incredibly dangerous. It is even more important to remain in your car if you break down during the nighttime or in poor weather conditions, since your visibility and that of other drivers is compromised.
Some stretches of road contain call boxes, which are direct-line phones that stranded drivers can use to call for help. Only go to one of these phones if it is within visibility and walking distance. It is a much safer decision to stay in your car and wait for help than to walk along the highway looking for a call box.
Be Armed with Knowledge (and Backup)
Keep a handy car repair book in your car so you can have a reference to use in times of distress. Be familiar with how to change tires and jump a battery. If you cannot repair these things yourself, make sure you have a subscription to a roadside assistance service so that you can have the peace of mind knowing that help is on its way. Calling the basic 911 number is also a good idea if you have a cell phone on you.
Make Yourself Known
If you do not have access to such a service, it is good to be aware that the busier a roadway is, the more frequently and heavily patrolled it will be. If your car is not moving on a busy road, a highway patrol officer or other official will notice that something is wrong and come to your aid. A good way of alerting an officer or anyone else around you to your situation is by hanging a white fabric outside of the car or by tying it to your antenna. In snowy conditions, it is more viable to hang a brightly colored cloth outside of your car.
Let There Be Light
The most difficult breakdown location is an isolated area. This is where your experience and know-how with auto repair is most valuable. If you don’t have such knowledge, there’s still hope. Buying preparatory equipment such as reflectors, light beacons, flares, spare tires, or spare canisters filled with gas can hasten and alleviate the anxiety-inducing waiting process. Light-producing objects are very important to have in case of nighttime car troubles.
If you can still run your car, leave it idling on the shoulder of the road and turn your interior lights on (or prop any door open), so that other drivers will recognize that you are stationary. A quick way to get other drivers to realize you need help is to open your hood. This way there won’t be any assuming you’re just trying to get directions.
Prevent and Prepare
Prevention and preparation are pivotal to these scenarios. Take care of your vehicle as best you can, but make sure you’re not blindsided should you find yourself stranded on the road.
