Texting While Driving Video PSAs

Think texting while driving is merely a multi-tasking challenge? These videos show otherwise.
Due to the versatility and advancement of mobile technology, we now use our phones for everything. From chatting with friends to ordering takeout, our phones have become an extension of our lives. In fact, many people are never more than a few feet from their mobile device at all times. The ubiquitous nature of cell phones has made road safety more complicated and dangerous. State laws have put bans into place to curb the use of mobile devices when drivers are behind the wheel. But sometimes, law enforcement isn’t enough to convince both young and old drivers to put their phones away when they buckle up. In this post, we review some of the best texting while driving videos to help send a powerful message to educate the public of this road safety concern.
The Impossible Texting and Driving Test
Responsible Young Drivers (RYD) is a Belgian organization that promotes road safety and targets young drivers, asking them to demonstrate responsible driving. In this video called “The impossible texting and driving test,” young drivers are told that in order to pass their driving test, they must pass the mobile phone test as well. Simply put, these drivers are instructed to text while driving. Sounds easy enough? Watch.
In one of the first videos from the “Stop the Wrecks, Stop the Texts” campaign by the Ad Council in collaboration with the State Attorney General and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this PSA takes a general stance on how easily distracted we are by our mobile devices – even if we aren’t behind the wheel. While multitasking in a digitally connected world has become the norm, there are still dangers to look out for whether we’re texting on the sidewalk, in the car or on a flight of stairs.
“Glee” Distracted Driving
Glee cast member, Diana Agron appears in a short, but powerful video as part of the “Stop the Texts, Stop the Wrecks” campaign. In partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Distraction.gov and the National Organization for Youth Safety, this message brings home the fact that when you’re sending or reading a text message, your eyes are off the road for an average of five seconds. And those five seconds could have life-threatening consequences.
“From One Second to the Next”
In a short documentary from award winning director, Werner Herzog, sponsored by AT&T’s “It Can Wait” driver safety campaign, this public service video takes a somber, heart-wrenching approach to the dangers of texting and driving. By chronicling the lives of real people involved in texting while driving incidents, Herzog uses storytelling to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving as it can have devastating effects on all of the parties involved.
AT&T Teen Driving Survey
AT&T takes the statistical approach in this teen driving survey video. While the other videos on the list use emotional appeal and reenactments, this video uses hard data to demonstrate how widespread the texting while driving epidemic is in the U.S. For example, 61% of teens glance at their phone to read a text message and 43% admit to sending a text while driving, even though 97% of the teens surveyed said that texting and driving is dangerous. The survey PSA also reveals that teens are open to the idea of using a phone application that prevents texting while driving which would be an effective way to get them and their friends to stop the dangerous habit.
