Have you or a loved one recently been informed that you need an SR-22? Don’t fret! We’re here to ease your mind by breaking down the ins and outs of SR-22s.
Let’s start with a common misnomer…an SR-22 is a type of auto insurance. Wrong! Rather an SR-22, or Certificate of Financial Responsibility, is an insurance document. It is required by most state Department of Motor Vehicles for individuals with high risk insurance policies. The document is proof that the carrying individual has the minimum auto insurance liability coverage.
The court or state will require “high risk” drivers to apply for an SR-22 for several driving-related violations.
The most common offenses are:
- Driving Under the Influence/Driving While Intoxicated (DUI/DWI) conviction
- Serious moving violations, like reckless driving
- Repeat traffic violations and tickets, especially if the offenses fall within a short timeframe
- Causing an accident while driving without insurance
You may also be considered a high risk driver if you fall into one of the following categories:
- Inexperienced driver
- Elderly driver, typically 70 years or older
- Poor credit history
- Live in a high risk area
Either the court system or your state DMV will notify you if an SR-22 is required. The length for which an SR-22 is necessary completely depends on the state. Most commonly, the court will call for a 3-5 year term. If you cancel your policy during the necessary term, the auto insurance provider is required to notify the state. Failure to maintain an SR-22 during the required time period could lead to the revocation of driving privileges. Once the SR-22 expires, your insurance company will issue an SR-26, which certifies its termination.
It is not uncommon for high risk drivers to experience difficulty finding affordable auto insurance. They typically experience higher rates than those drivers not requiring an SR-22. Luckily, Good2Go has been high risk drivers’ auto insurance of choice for over 25 years.
